4. Mold, Mildew, or Musty Smells Indoors
What to Look For:
- A distinct musty odor that becomes more noticeable after rainstorms.
- Visible mold or mildew growth on basement walls, floor joists, or other wooden elements.
- An increase in allergy symptoms or respiratory irritation among household members.
What It Means: This is a sure sign that moisture is finding its way into your home through the foundation, basement, or crawl space. Without effective drainage solutions and potentially crawl space encapsulation, this moisture problem is likely to persist and spread, impacting your indoor air quality.
5. Gutters Overflow or Downspouts Pool Water
What to Look For:
- Water visibly spilling over the sides of your gutters during rain.
- Downspouts that discharge water directly next to your house.
- Puddles or saturated areas forming directly at the base of your downspouts.
What It Means: Your roof drainage system is improperly managing stormwater. If your gutters are clogged or your downspouts aren’t directing water at least 5–10 feet away from your foundation, that water will inevitably accumulate around your home and contribute to drainage issues.
