Width & Depth of Crack
Small hairline cracks can sometimes occur as a home settles naturally over time. However, cracks that are wider than about a quarter inch should not be ignored. Wider cracks may indicate that the foundation is shifting or settling unevenly.
Depth also matters. If a crack runs deep into the concrete or appears on both the interior and exterior of a foundation wall, it could point to structural movement. In many cases, a professional inspection is the best way to determine whether a crack is cosmetic or a sign of a deeper issue.
Water or Moisture Is Present
If you notice water or moisture around a foundation crack, it may be a sign that the crack is allowing water to enter your home. This can lead to additional problems beyond the foundation itself.
Moisture entering through foundation cracks can cause:
- Mold growth
- Musty odors inside the home
- Wood damage in crawl spaces
- Increased humidity indoors
In areas like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Nashville where humidity levels are high, even a small crack can allow enough moisture inside to create ongoing issues. Waterproofing and foundation repairs may be necessary to prevent long-term damage.
